Mushroom Stroganoff Pizza and See How They Run

Hello! Welcome to Pizza and a Movie! It’s good to back in the swing of things at home and we are getting right back to it with this Mushroom Stroganoff Pizza. Maybe you remember a couple weeks ago, we did a Mixed Mushroom Stroganoff recipe and I mentioned at the time that I had leftovers. And maybe those of you who have been following the blog for a bit now know that I love turning my leftovers into new dishes. The new dish is often pizza…because well, why not? Let’s jump right into this Mushroom Stroganoff Pizza.

I love turning leftovers into pizza because it gives me a chance to exercise some creativity when it comes to reimagining flavor combinations. For instance, the Stroganoff is mushrooms and onions, cooked with white wine, garlic and thyme. Finished with Dijon mustard and sour cream, it’s a savory blend of rich flavors. To give this pizza a little different character, I am thinking some acid and spicy heat to mellow the richness that I am adding to with the mozzarella cheese.

Fried Capers

I am going to bake the pizza with the Mushroom Stroganoff and cheese, then I will finish it with the fried capers and Calabrian Chiles. So while I wait for the oven to preheat to 450 degrees F, with a pizza steel (or stone), I will quickly fry the rinsed and dried capers in a little olive oil over high heat. Stir occasionally. Cook Just until they start to look a little crispy and slightly browned.

Transfer the fried capers to a paper towel to drain excess oil and set aside. Now on to the pizza!

Mushroom Stroganoff Pizza

Roll Stretch or spin your dough out on a lightly floured pizza peel. Sprinkle about half of the grated mozzarella on the dough. Then spoon on the Mushroom Stroganoff. Evenly spread the mushroom mixture over the dough and cheese.

Top the mushroom mixture with the remaining cheese. And we are ready for the oven.

Bake the pizza on the preheated pizza stone or steel for about 12-15 minutes. Until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the crust is puffed and golden. When the pizza comes out and the crust is still very hot, brush olive oil over the crust.

I love this combination; the rich and flavorful Mushroom Stroganoff makes a great pizza topping – a creamy mushroom mixture on a pizza? Yes please! The fried capers add a little pop of briny flavor and the spicy/sour chopped Calabrian Chiles cut through the richness with their heat and acid. A very well-balanced combination! You don’t have to make the Mixed Mushroom Stroganoff specially for this pizza if you don’t want to…just pin this recipe for when you have leftovers of that fantastic Mushroom Stroganoff. Let’s get to the movie!

Movie Night: See How They Run

I was looking forward to seeing this movie when I first saw the preview. It looked like a fun whodunnit movie and I love Sam Rockwell, Saoirse Ronan and Adrien Brody. Set in 1953, in London’s West End, the film follows a murder investigation that takes place on the movie set of a hit West End play that is in the works to be made into a movie.

This movie falls in the category of Clue or Knives Out; it’s a bit meta, totally tongue in cheek, full of cute puns and self referential humor. I quite enjoyed it. The shots and framing reminded me of Wes Anderson films, with beautifully symmetrical shots – very stylish. In the tradition of British great house murder mysteries, this film is a fun take on the classic genre. Those familiar with these British mysteries will especially enjoy the self referential humor; and even those who are not well versed on the genre will pick up on familiar names and tropes.

See How They Run is available to stream with a subscription on HBO Max and Hulu Premium. Also available to rent on Google Play, Apple TV, YouTube, Amazon Prime and Vudu.

Thanks so much for joining me today for Pizza and a Movie! Have a great weekend, I will see you here again on Sunday. Take care and be well, xo Kelly

I love remaking leftovers too, but this one is a whole new category. Mushroom stroganoff and fried capers. Yes! I once bought a one pound jar of capers at Sam’s, just because I could. I know better now. Even the most ardent caper devotee runs out of steam. However, back to the pizza: as delightful and delicious as the stroganoff is, this is a fun twist on it. My oven is in desperate need of cleaning after a pizza disaster last week, and I am not doing anything until it gets cleaned out. The movie looks like something we would rewatch obsessively. Tonight we will be watching with cheeseburgers. This movie looks like a fun one, and the protagonists all seem to do comedy very well. Adrian Brody really cracked me up, and Saoirse Ronan was right behind him. Thanks for tossing this one at us! It’s a winner with a capital W.

I didn’t do any more true ghost stories, because while they weren’t frightening to us, but merely annoying: other people in the past have had nightmares from them. The one thing I will say is that young children can see ghosts. My husband’s agents bought some used furniture for the downstairs bedroom, so the boys could watch TV. My husband woke up every night at the same time and saw an elderly man sitting on the sofa. When I was five, I saw a black cat in our house. Most often he would see him running out of a closet or sleeping on the radiator. No one else ever saw him. Our friend Matt grew up in a haunted house. A disembodied hand would open the attic door and wave at the kids, then close the door and that was it until the next time. At one house my children reported seeing an old man standing on the vacuum cleaner in the hall. I never saw him, but I knew our ghost was a cantankerous elderly man. Realtors have also seen and experienced odd things. We went to look at a lot of houses before we bought our current home. One in particular stood out as being particularly creepy. When we got there, I wouldn’t go in. My son did, and felt uncomfortable, like he was being watched. The realtor sad she wouldn’t go in by herself. One of our realtor’s close friends, also a realtor, told about a particular hose, where an unplugged phone rang any time anyone was there. The woman selling the house said it was her mother, and just say hello, and hang up. None of our haunted houses were scary most of the time, but in retrospect they were. Ghosts can’t hurt you. If you ignore them or stay out of the rooms they are attached to, you should be fine. If you have one that does attempt to hurt you, you need to get out of the house. Fast.

Very interesting, Mari. You are right though, ghosts and ghost can be really scary for many of us. I am happy you enjoyed this movie, it seemed to me like one you’d enjoy. We finally got the good rain soaking we needed, thanks to Nicole…Looking forward to a sunny weekend though. Have a great weekend! xo Kelly
