Pesto Pepperoni and Pineapple Pizza and Goodfellas

Hello and welcome to Pizza and a Movie! Hang on to your hats because we have pineapple on our pizza today! Pesto, pepperoni and pineapple – a combination that might sound peculiar to you. But, this is one of my most favorite combinations of all time. I am pretty sure I came up with this combination when I worked at Escape From NY Pizza, but that was so many years ago. What I am sure of is how much I love this combination. Let’s jump right in – it’s Pesto Pepperoni and Pineapple Pizza!

I have to say that this pizza has it all: the basil pesto is herbaceous and savory; the pepperoni is meaty and a little spicy; the pineapple is lightly sweet and goes so beautifully with mozzarella. Begin by preheating the oven to 450 degrees F, with a pizza steel or stone.

Building the Pesto Pepperoni and Pineapple Pizza

I am using crushed pineapple for this pizza because I like how I can get even coverage of pineapple without overdoing it. I drained the can of crushed pineapple and transferred the crushed pineapple to a paper towel-lined plate. Then I have basil pesto, pepperoni and fresh grated mozzarella.

Roll, stretch or pull your pizza dough out to about a 12-inch round, on a lightly floured surface. Use a silicone spatula to spread the pesto on the dough, leaving about a 1-inch border for the crust. Top the pesto with some mozzarella. Follow that with the pepperoni.

After the pepperoni, add a little more cheese. Then add the crushed pineapple.

Finally, top the whole pizza with a little more mozzarella and we are ready for the oven!

Bake the pizza for 10-15 minutes, until the crust is puffed and golden and the cheese is melted, bubbly and lightly browning in spots.

If you’ve made it this far in this post, I must have piqued your interest with this combination! The piquant pepperoni goes so perfectly with pineapple. Even without the pesto, pepperoni and pineapple is a wonderful flavor combination. But when you add the basil pesto to the mix, it punches everything up with its herby, savory flavor. I do hope you give this pizza a try!

Movie Night: Goodfellas

We have our Pesto Pepperoni and Pineapple Pizza ready, so let’s get to the movie! To go along with one of my favorite combinations of all time, we have one of my top 3 movies of all time, Goodfellas. This is a Martin Scorsese film from 1990, starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco, and many other recognizable actors. It’s a gangster movie set in the 50s through the 80s. It is based on the 1985 book Wiseguy, by Nicholas Pileggi and it follows the rise and fall of Henry Hill, a real life mob associate, played by Ray Liotta.

Critically acclaimed, Goodfellas is often regarded as Scorsese’s best film. I love everything about this film. The story, writing, acting, design, costumes and music are spot on. If you haven’t seen this movie ever, or just in a long time, definitely give it a watch. Because it’s such a well-done a period piece, it holds up beautifully 32 years after its release. Goodfellas is available to watch with a subscription to HBO Max, and to rent on Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu, YouTube and Amazon Prime.

Thank you so much for stopping by today for Pizza and a Movie! Have a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend, take care and be well! xo Kelly

Hi Kelly, I was thinking when shopping the other day it must just about time for another pizza, this morning I was thinking Tandoori Chicken but with your pop up and the fact that I gave all of the required ingredients I think it will be your recipe. I did buy the canned pineapple months ago to make a boiled pineapple fruitcake, but it is still sitting there. I guess you didn’t use the whole can or did you? Enjoy your weekend and happy cooking 🧑‍🍳

Hi Sally, I am so happy you’ll make this pizza! I used nearly the whole can of crushed pineapple. It was a small, 15 ounce can, drained. But you can use as much or as little as you like! I hope you like this pizza, let me know how it goes for you! Take care, xo Kelly

I can not believe that we never watched this movie. My husband probably did because he watched everything. I wanted to check in to see what the movie was for Friday, and being me, I didn’t look until today. This one has three very good actors. Whenever I think of Ray Liotta, he’s laughing maniacally, and he does it better than anyone. De Niro is one of the greats, and I love Joe Pesci. He is in a class by himself. My kids and I loved him in Lethal Weapon and they would go around spouting his lines about the drive in at every opportunity. The pizza sounds good andI hope to make it sometime soon, which probably means a few weeks! Happy Weekend to Kelly, Alex, Terry, the adorable Dante, and his ladies. What breed is Penny? For some reason I thought they were all the same. Don’t tell Sadie, because she will never forgive me if you do!
