St. Patrick’s Pizza: The Banshees of Inisherin

Hello and Welcome to Pizza and a Movie on Djalali Cooks! Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Of course you know I had to do a fun St. Patrick’s Pizza today. Honestly this pizza is a good one any time of year. I did one similar to this with my Pastrami Sandwich Pizza. If you think of a pizza as a giant open faced hot sandwich, you can get really creative with your toppings. For this St. Patrick’s Pizza, we have thinly sliced corned beef, strips of leftover Skillet Roasted Cabbage, provolone and Gruyere cheese and we finish the pizza with sliced pepperoncini peppers and a secret sauce dressing by Marie’s. Let’s get to it!

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F with a pizza stone or steel. Yesterday, I featured the Skillet Roasted Cabbage, which was dressed with a honey mustard bacon vinaigrette. Those flavors will add some depth to this Corned Beef Pizza. The Marie’s Secret Sauce we finish the pie with is like a Thousand Island dressing. So we are taking a classic St. Patrick’s meal (corned beef and cabbage) and giving it a Jewish Deli sandwich makeover.

Assembling the St. Patrick’s Pizza

Roll, spin or stretch your prepared pizza dough to about 12-inches round on a lightly floured pizza peel. I have pre-sliced provolone, lay the slices of provolone on the pizza to cover the bottom, leaving a 1/2-inch border for the crust. Crumple each slice of corned beef and place the individual pieces on the provolone cheese.

Sprinkle a little grated Gruyere on top of the corned beef crumples. Then top with the sliced roasted cabbage. Top the cabbage slices with another 1/4 cup of grated Gruyere and we are ready for the oven!

Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, until the crust is puffed and golden and the cheese is melted and beginning to brown in spots.

This pizza is so good! The flavors are rich and the leftover Skillet Roasted Cabbage, dressed with the bacon mustard vinaigrette adds a light sauerkraut vibe. The corned beef is meaty, with great texture variation since we crumpled the slices. The pickled pepperoncini peppers bring a briny bite with a little bit of heat. Overall, such a great combination!

Movie Night: The Banshees of Inisherin

Today’s movie takes place on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland. Perfect for a St. Patrick’s Day movie night! Starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson who play lifelong friends. The two men find themselves at an impasse after Colm (Brendan Gleeson) abruptly ends their friendship. Pádraic (Colin Farrell) is unable to accept the end of the friendship and the consequences are surprising. Kerry Condon is wonderful as Pádraic’s sister, Siobhán.

I really enjoyed watching these two actors together again, they were both so good in In Bruges, which if you haven’t seen that you should add it and The Banshees of Inisherin to the top of your watch list!

The Banshees of Inisherin is available to watch with a subscription to HBO Max, a premium subscription to Hulu and Amazon Prime; and available to rent on YouTube, Redbox, Apple TV and Google Play.

Thank you so much for joining me today for Pizza and a Movie! I hope you have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day! Take care and be well, xo Kelly

What a great topical recipe, and it hits all the right notes. With the corned beef and cabbage. It’s so nice to see a recipe that’s an homage, rather than the over done, unsurprising fare that’s churned out by too many bloggers. I have seen too many recipes for beer bread, soda bread,Guinness stew, and desserts with Bailey’s! I’ve even seen green soda bread with chocolate chips. Ugh! What a lovely note of sanity this was. I love it that your pizzas use different cheeses than the standard mozzarella and Parmesan. Provolone and Gruyère take it to an entirely different level. I don’t think there s a dairy free Gruyère yet, but there are some really good Provolones, and that will be just lovely on mine. My first thought when I saw the trailer was that Colin Farrell was so much older. But since it has been years since I’ve seen him in anything, he should be! The acting looks phenomenal, and this one is going on my watch list. The word banshee threw me off, and I was half expecting a horror movie. In a way I suppose it is a horror to lose a friendship and not ever know why. I saw a Disney movie as a young child that featured a banshee and I had nightmares for years. But then I was a sensitive child, and everything gave me nightmares. Happy Beautiful Frivolous Friday Kelly. The sun is out, the wind is gone, a d the outside birds are celebrating. It’s so lovely to hear their brave, happy songs this year. The inside birds re lazy and haven’t gotten up yet. The humans have been up since six, but no singing from us yet either.

Morning Mari! Sounds like a lovely Friday ahead for you. We are having a rainy day here, so the dogs are not having their best Friday. Rainy days really play havoc on my plans to cook and shoot a recipe – the natural light I rely on is not good. But we make it through… Perfect for a rainy day, I am making a lentil soup for Monday’s post. Have a great weekend! xo Kelly
